Do you run online support groups / chat rooms

No, we no longer have online groups.

If you would like to join a support group, that also has a chat room, visit Yahoo Groups and do a search on anxiety disorders. http://groups.yahoo.com/ You will find there are quite a number of groups for you to choose from.

Is this panic and anxiety?

If you are unsure that you have an anxiety disorder, please consult your doctor. Anxiety Disorders can mimic a number of physical conditions and it is important for you to speak with your doctor so that your symptoms can be fully assessed. We are not able to make an assessment, or offer you an opinion, as to what your symptoms could be.

If you have been diagnosed as having panic attacks and anxiety and you are having difficulties in accepting the diagnosis, you can seek a second opinion from another doctor. The fear of 'what if the doctor has made a mistake', can create additional anxiety or panic. Asking for a second opinion can assist in easing this particular fear.

I have just had my first panic attack, what can I do?

As you have only just begun to experience panic attacks then you are in an ideal position to prevent much of the distress other people have experienced in the long term. Our Prevention pages detail early intervention strategies which can help to prevent or minimise any possible development of an anxiety disorder.

What is the cause of an anxiety disorder?

There are a three major theories as to the cause of anxiety disorders. These are listed on our web page Causes

I am worried about the physical effects of my panic disorder on my heart.

The Heart Foundation (Australia) have published a review of primary studies on their web site and conclude there is "little evidence to link panic disorder with either chronic heart disease development or (its) progression."

Ref "Heart Foundation Position Paper", Medical Journal of Australia, 2003, 178 (6) 272 - 276

I am frightened I will go insane through my panic and anxiety.

Although it can feel like it, people with a primary anxiety disorder do not go insane. And you won't be the first one to do so !

What is depersonalisation and derealisation?

Many people with panic disorder experience feelings of depersonalisation (feeling detached from the body) and/or derealisation (a feeling that nothing is real and/or that the person is not real.). You can read about these symptoms and how they occur on our web page Derealisation.

Why can't I recover?

There are many reasons as to why people struggle to recover. One of the main reasons is that anxiety disorders have only been recognised by the medical profession since 1980, but it has only been since 1994 that a more complete understanding about the disorders has developed. People were not diagnosed, nor received long term effective treatment. Read our Article as to why people struggle to recover.
